Pass it on

Born Fighting

61Watch it awake.

A kinsman's defense of a people. Useful, proud, and sometimes too ready to call a wound a destiny.

The review

Read it to learn the route: Ulster, the backcountry, the Revolution, the Civil War, the twentieth-century draft. Webb is not a neutral guide, and he says so. The value is the refusal to treat Appalachia and the enlisted ranks as a joke or a problem. The risk is a pride that explains away harm done by the same people.

Use it as a map, then check a chapter against a plainer history. A people can be honored without being told they were always the injured party.

The glance

Piety is the thin one.

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Tillie, a Mennonite Maid

60Watch it awake.

A sharp little novel about a real people and the cost of leaving their kitchen.

The review

Helen Martin wrote her Pennsylvania Dutch neighbors with a satire they earned and a tenderness she does not always sustain. Tillie is not a modern heroine pasted into a bonnet. She wants books, and the people who raised her experience that want as a rejection. Both facts can be true.

Read it as a document of a people who intended not to dissolve, and of a girl who paid for the dissolution. Do not use it to sneer at Plain people. They were trying to keep a house.
