Pass it on
Belizaire the Cajun
63Watch it awake.
A small film that takes a distinct people seriously: faith, French, and a fight over who owns the parish.
The review
Almost nobody watches this, which is part of why a people disappears from the shelf. Belizaire is not a documentary and not a great film. It is a rare one in which Cajuns are the subject rather than the seasoning. The healer is cunning. The film thinks cunning in defense of a people is allowed to be morally mixed. That is adult.
Watch it if you can find it. It is a better Louisiana story than a reality show about the swamp.

The glance
Industry is the thin one.

Consider this
Little Women
75 instead of 63
Little Women is still a drama film, and it scores 75 instead of 63. What you gain is household: Sisters and a mother.
The eight
- 6Industry
Healing, farming, and the politics of a parish.
- 6Household
Kinship is the reason he schemes. The schemes are not always clean.
- 6Piety
Catholic practice is part of the ground, not a footnote.
- 6Courage
He stays and fights in the ways a man without an army fights.
- 6Republic
A parish where Anglos and Cajuns are contesting the law itself.
- 6Temperance
It is modest. The picture does not need a massacre to be about a people.
- 7Truth
It is on the side of a specific community and lets them be sharp, not pure.
- 7Stewardship
The hope is that the community is still there after the vigilantes.
