    The Bear

A hymn to craft, sung in a panic. The work is holy. The panic is a bad teacher.

Carmy comes back to Chicago to keep a dead brother's shop from dying too. The show believes, correctly, that a sandwich made with care is a kind of love, and that a brigade is a household with tickets. It also believes that the way you reach excellence is to live at a scream. Only one of those beliefs belongs in your kitchen.

Take the standard of work. Leave the glamor of breakdown. If you run a crew, a family, or just your own temper, notice how often the episode rewards the man who cannot come down. Craft is a virtue. Frenzy is how craft gets used as an excuse to be impossible to live with.

    1. Industry

      10/10

Nobody on television respects a craft more. The beef window is a moral fact.

    2. Household

      6/10

Blood family and a kitchen crew. Both are loved. Both are yelled at.

    3. Piety

      4/10

Excellence functions as a religion, with anxiety as the liturgy.

    4. Courage

      7/10

They attempt a harder standard than the block requires.

    5. Republic

      5/10

A small business is a little republic. It is usually in emergency session.

    6. Temperance

      4/10

The show catechizes stress. You can leave an episode buzzing and worse.

    7. Truth

      7/10

Grief unspoken is the thing burning the tickets.

    8. Stewardship

      8/10

A shop, a recipe, a standard handed to the next crew. That is posterity.

Live historicallyMake one meal carefully and serve it calmly. The calm is part of the recipe.

    Invincible

Bloody, and morally awake. Power is a debt, not a personality.

Omni-Man is what strength looks like when it has no neighbor, only a mission and a species-contempt. His son was raised on a kinder story and has to survive the correction. That is a real moral tale, closer to an old one than the jokes suggest. The strong are not the point. What they owe is the point.

It is also savagely violent, and the savagery will be why some people stay. Do not hand it to a child because it is a cartoon. If you watch it, watch the mother and the choice. Then ask, in your own smaller life, whether your strength is a shelter or a rank.

    1. Industry

      6/10

He has to learn the job. Power is not treated as self-justifying.

    2. Household

      8/10

Father and son, a mother, a girlfriend: the house is the argument.

    3. Piety

      5/10

A moral law shows up as the question his father refuses.

    4. Courage

      8/10

The boy chooses the weaker people at great cost.

    5. Republic

      7/10

What the strong owe a city is the theme, not a side quest.

    6. Temperance

      3/10

The violence is extreme. It risks becoming the reason to press play.

    7. Truth

      8/10

A father's lie about who he is drives the tragedy.

    8. Stewardship

      7/10

The son is the posterity, and he rejects the inheritance of contempt.

Live historicallyUse one advantage you have — money, time, a skill, a calm temper — for someone who cannot repay it.

    Maid

    Netflix · 2021 · Series

    Maid

Work, a child, and the paperwork of getting free. Hard to watch. Worth it for a grown house.

Alex is not a symbol. She is a woman counting dollars in a car seat while her daughter sleeps, and the series is brave enough to stay with the counting. The charm of the man she left is not denied. That is why the leaving is hard, and why the show is more honest than a poster about strength. It is also bleak, and some hours are too much.

Not for children. For a grown son or daughter who has started to think poverty is a personality, it is a correction. Watch it, then look at what your own house pays other people to do.

    1. Industry

      9/10

Cleaning houses is filmed as labor with a wage, a body, and a clock. Rare, and right.

    2. Household

      7/10

She is trying to make a safe house for one child. The men who love her make it harder.

    3. Piety

      4/10

Desperation is honest. Faith is mostly absent, and not mocked.

    4. Courage

      8/10

Leaving, with no money and a toddler, is the bravest thing in the week's shelf.

    5. Republic

      6/10

Shelters, courts, and benefits are shown as a country a poor woman has to learn.

    6. Temperance

      6/10

Drinking and charm are given their bill. The show does not find them romantic for long.

    7. Truth

      9/10

It tells the truth about money: the difference between being helped and being trapped is often a deposit.

    8. Stewardship

      8/10

Everything she does is so the girl will not inherit the house she is escaping.

Live historicallyPay someone who works in your house, or on it, fully and on time. If you are that person, keep one dollar you do not have to explain.

    Cedar Cove

A judge, a newspaper, a town that still has to look each other in the face. Solid, not grand.

Debbie Macomber's town runs on people who still have to greet each other after the verdict. That is the republican part, and it is the part worth keeping. Olivia Lockhart is a judge who cannot leave the robe at the office, because her own family keeps walking into the kind of trouble she sentences in other people.

It will not change a life the way a harder film will. It will remind a tired adult that a town is made of particular promises: a lighthouse kept, a paper printed, a ruling explained. Watch one season if you want a story in which the neighbors are not the enemy. Then keep one local promise you have been treating as optional.

    1. Industry

      7/10

The bench is a job. So is the paper. Both are shown as work, not as a vibe.

    2. Household

      8/10

Divorce, adult children, a hope of marrying again. The household is the argument.

    3. Piety

      6/10

Decency is the creed. Church is nearby and not insisted on.

    4. Courage

      6/10

Olivia rules against the easy thing when the town would rather she didn't.

    5. Republic

      8/10

A municipal court is ordered liberty at the size of a sidewalk.

    6. Temperance

      7/10

Scandal is a problem to be answered, not a product.

    7. Truth

      7/10

    8. Stewardship

      7/10

Live historicallyKeep one local promise this week. A meeting, a neighbor, a bill you said you would handle.

    The Mandalorian

A western about keeping a child. The creed matters when it costs the paycheck.

It begins as a man who collects people for money and becomes a man who will not sell a child. That is an old story and a good one. The helmet and the myth are costume. The decision is not. A household can start in a cockpit if someone decides the small person counts more than the purse.

Do not let the gunfights do your thinking. Ask which of your own rules you keep only when they pay. The show is worth an evening when it stays on that question, and ordinary when it forgets the child and goes back to the toy box.

    1. Industry

      7/10

He is good at a trade. The trade starts as hunting people for money.

    2. Household

      8/10

The whole turn of the story is a man choosing a child over a fee.

    3. Piety

      6/10

    8. Stewardship

    Project Hail Mary

    Prime Video · 2026 · Film

    Project Hail Mary

Work, a friend who is not your kind, and a choice that is not about coming home famous. Keep the friendship. Do not make science a church.

Ryland Grace is a teacher who did not volunteer to be brave. The story people were sold puts him at a far job with the lights going out at home, and then gives him a stranger, Rocky, whose own world is dying and whose gift is that he will work the problem beside you. That friendship is the film's claim to a soul. Competence is honored, which is right. Competence is not a sacrament.

The desk will not narrate a last shot it is not willing to swear to. It will say the measure of the tale: a lonely errand becomes a duty to a particular other person, and the glamour is the smaller part. If the picture keeps that, it belongs with the better adventures. If it keeps only the peril, you have read the better version already.

    1. Industry

      9/10

The work of the problem is the glory.

    Paddington 2

    Prime Video · 2017 · Film

    Paddington 2

Keep it. Courtesy, work, and a neighborhood that deserves the bear.

Paddington's goodness is not softness. He works, he is precise, he goes to prison without becoming cynical, and he improves the people in the cells by expecting them to be neighbors. The villain wants the book's secret for himself. The bear wants the book as a gift. That is the whole moral difference, and the film never blurs it for a clever twist. The pop-up book at the end is a picture of attention: someone made a city carefully enough to live inside.

There is almost nothing here a house needs to apologize for. Watch it when the week has been sharp. Then be more polite than you feel, on purpose.

    Gabby's Dollhouse

Right for five. Kind, bright, and finished in a sitting. Stay in the room.

This is the one on Kiki's row that was made for her age. A girl, a house, a small trouble, and a making at the end. Five can follow it. The colors are loud and the cats are silly, and neither of those is a harm.

Sit with her. When it ends, do the craft with real paper if she asks. If the dollhouse becomes the afternoon, you have let a pleasant show raise the hour. One or two, then the floor.

    Fallout

The old world's bill comes due. Ironic, bloody, and not empty of a moral.

The surface is a joke about retro America until it isn't. Someone sold the future, pocketed the vaults, and left the grandchildren the ash. That is a stewardship story, and a bitter one. The show also loves a splatter gag, and the gag keeps trying to fire the moral.

Watch the brother and sister, and the question of what a pleasant lie is worth. Do not let the retro font convince you nihilism is wisdom. The standard agrees with the indictment of a faithless elite. It does not agree that nothing is left but a costume and a gun. If you surface from it meaner, you watched it wrong.

    To Kill a Mockingbird

    Prime Video · 1962 · Film

    To Kill a Mockingbird

Keep it. Courage is a man going to the courthouse when he knows the verdict.

Atticus is not a speech. He is a father who will not take a case he does not mean, and who makes Scout and Jem live next to the consequence. Tom's dignity is not a lesson for white comfort. The film is of its year and still clearer than most of ours about a stacked court. The night on the porch, the rabid dog, the injunction to walk in another person's shoes: these are practical, not decorative.

Watch it, and do not let the warmth of the childhood frame excuse the trial. The childhood is there so you see what a house teaches by what the father will stand up in public and say.
