Whalefall

The spectacle is the whale. The story is a letter he would not read.

A father who is dying leaves his family and the sea. A year later the son goes down alone, against the rule of the craft, to bring something back to bury. A whale takes him. Inside it, with the air running out, the father is the voice he has been refusing. He gets out. He still does not have the body. He has the letter.

The whale is what the poster sells. The measure is the letter. A house can watch the escape. Do not let the size of the animal become the point. The point is a son who comes back to the people who are still here.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Diving is a craft his father taught. Going down alone breaks the craft's first rule.

  2. Household

    8/10

A mother and sisters are waiting. The father is the absence the son goes after.

  3. Piety

    5/10

No creed. The unread letter is the nearest thing to a last word.

  4. Courage

    8/10

He goes into the dark so the family can bury something. The fear does not get a vote.

  5. Republic

    4/10

This is one family, not a town.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

The terror is the weather he is in. It is not offered as a thrill to copy.

  7. Truth

    7/10

He would not read what his father left. Coming back is the decision to read it.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

He returns to the living. Staying with the dead was the other ending, and he does not take it.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

He keeps the stranger safe, and he does not keep him.

Elliott wants a friend in a house that has a hole in it. The film understands the want, and it does not let the want win. E.T. has a home that is not this cul-de-sac. Keeping him would be the child's victory and the stranger's exile. The goodbye is the measure.

A child can watch it. Say, when it ends, that loving someone is not the same as owning them. The government men are a cartoon of a real temptation: to treat a life as a specimen because you can.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

A child is not at a trade. The work he does do is the hiding, the building, and the getting of the friend to the ship.

  2. Household

    7/10

The father is already gone. The mother is tired and still the mother. The children keep a secret a parent should have been told.

  3. Piety

    6/10

The raised finger and the goodbye are played as reverence. The film believes a life can be owed to someone who is not useful.

  4. Courage

    8/10

The courage is the last reel. He takes the friend to the ship instead of keeping the miracle in the closet.

  5. Republic

    4/10

The men with the keys are a lab, not a people. The picture is not interested in a republic. It is interested in a yard.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

The fear is real and it is not played as a joke on the small. The bike flight is joy, not a taunt.

  7. Truth

    7/10

A boy tells the truth by refusing to hand a living thing to people who would take it apart.

  8. Stewardship

    8/10

What is not his, he returns. That is the whole stewardship of the film, and it is the right one.
