To Catch a Smuggler

Lawful work at a border. Respect the work. Do not make the officer's day a thrill.

National Geographic follows border and customs teams as they search cars, containers, and luggage. The work is inspection, patience, and a legal limit: not everyone is guilty, and the ones who are may be carrying someone else's misery. The show can slide into a highlight reel of busts. The better hours show the boring search that protects a public the travelers will never meet.

Adults and older teens. It is not a toy. Say that a border is a form of stewardship — a people deciding what enters — and that a person in the line is still a person. Both sentences.

The eight

  1. Industry

    8/10

Inspection as a craft. The find is the end of a boring method.

  2. Household

    2/10

The officers have lives off camera. The show is not about them.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    Duty, not devotion.

  4. Courage

    6/10

They walk up to the car that might be the one.

  5. Republic

    7/10

A state doing one of the few jobs that is actually its job.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

The thrill is the audience's temptation. The work is repetitive on purpose.

  7. Truth

    7/10

A search either finds the thing or it does not.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

What they are keeping out is a damage aimed at other people's children.
