The Invite

The resentment gets said. The remedy on offer is to spend the vow.

Joe comes home to a dinner he did not want. Angela wants friends in the building. The friends upstairs are blunt about the parties they throw, and the evening turns into an invitation to swap. The public account has them agreeing, and then failing at it, and then saying the resentments they had been spending on noise from the ceiling.

The honesty is worth something. The remedy is not. A house that has gone quiet does not need a second couple to become a marriage again. A first measure from the published story. Do not treat the party as the brave part.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

He teaches music for a living and hates the living. The work is real. The film is not interested in it for long.

  2. Household

    3/10

A marriage that has gone quiet is the subject. The evening's experiment is to open it to other people.

  3. Piety

    2/10

The film opens by quoting a line against marriage. A vow is the problem the night would like to get past.

  4. Courage

    4/10

Staying in the argument takes nerve. Agreeing to the swap is the smaller choice, and they do agree.

  5. Republic

    3/10

Four people in an apartment are not a people. Nothing here is about anyone beyond the table.

  6. Temperance

    2/10

A sex party is the bait, and the film is pleased to have it. Restraint is what the guests have come to talk them out of.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The resentments are said out loud, including a year without each other. That much is honest.

  8. Stewardship

    3/10

What they were given is a marriage. The night spends it to see what the neighbors have.

Verity

The manuscript is the danger. So is standing too near the husband.

Lowen Ashleigh is brought in to write in place of Verity Crawford and finds pages that claim to be a life, not a novel. The pages concern the husband. The public story stops at the blur: she cannot separate the book from the house, and she does not keep her distance from the man in it. Deadly secrets are promised. The measure does not need the last page to see the bargain.

A first measure, from the story the studio prints. If the notes are true, someone in that house was not safe. If they are a novel, the reader is being played. Either way, a married threshold is not a plot device for the person standing in the kitchen.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

She is hired to finish another woman's books. The work is real until the notes replace it.

  2. Household

    3/10

The house she enters already has a husband, and the line between them does not stay a job.

  3. Piety

    2/10

Nothing in the public story asks what a vow is for.

  4. Courage

    4/10

She keeps reading. That is not the same as telling someone who could act.

  5. Republic

    3/10

A private horror is not yet a duty to anyone outside the house.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

The pleasure on offer is the secret, and the nearness to a married man.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The notes may be a confession or a fiction. The picture is built on not knowing which.

  8. Stewardship

    3/10

Nothing in the setup is being kept for a child. The house is being opened for a reader.
