Tenzing

The work is the climb. The measure is that he was written back into it.

The public story is plain enough to measure. Tenzing Norgay is nearly left as the man who carries for a British expedition. His wife and an ally inside the camp insist he belongs on the climb. He and Hillary go up together, and the mountain is not, for him, a thing to be beaten. It is Chomolungma.

A first measure from that account, not a claim about every scene. What is already firm is the order of the goods. The work is real. The reverence is real. A house can watch it for the correction: the person who knew the mountain was written out of the triumph, and a true telling has to put him back.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

The summit is not a wish. It is oxygen, a ridge, and a body that has done this work longer than the men who hired him.

  2. Household

    7/10

Dawa is the one who sends him toward the attempt. A marriage is in the decision, not parked at the bottom as a photograph.

  3. Piety

    8/10

He climbs Chomolungma as a presence owed reverence. The others climb a peak they mean to conquer. The film takes his word for the mountain.

  4. Courage

    9/10

The last ridge is the courage, and it is shared. Neither man gets there as a passenger.

  5. Republic

    6/10

Rank and empire are the weather of the camp. Two outsiders, a Sherpa and a New Zealander, are who the expedition actually depends on.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

The cold is a cost, not a thrill detached from the men who may not come down.

  7. Truth

    8/10

The first telling left the Sherpa as the help. This one puts his name on the ascent. That correction is the truth the picture is for.

  8. Stewardship

    8/10

A mountain revered is not a warehouse. Getting to the top and coming down to a wife is a complete act.

Live historicallyName the person whose work this house has been calling help.

Spirited Away

Keep it for an older child. Greed is the danger. Remembering who people are is the rescue.

Chihiro does not win by being chosen. She wins by showing up to a hard, humiliating job and by not forgetting her parents when forgetting would be easier. The bathhouse is a brilliant picture of an economy that eats. No-Face is what a loneliness becomes when it is fed every thing it points at. Yubaba steals names because a person without a name will work forever. The film is pagan, crowded, and more morally serious than most films that advertise a lesson.

Not for the very small. Right for a child who is ready to hear that appetite can change a face, and that work and memory can change it back.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

She earns the rescue by labor.

  2. Household

    8/10

She will not forget her parents.

  3. Piety

    5/10

A spirit world. Take it as a fable and keep your own prayers.

  4. Courage

    8/10

    She stays in the bathhouse.

  5. Republic

    6/10

    A whole economy of exploitation.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

    Gluttony is the monster.

  7. Truth

    9/10

Names are the truth that frees.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

It hands on memory as a duty.
