Small Prophets

The grief is real. A recipe is not an oracle.

Michael Sleep's girlfriend has been gone seven years. He works, he sees his dad, and he is given a way to grow homunculi whose job is to prophesy whether he will see her again. Neighbors notice the shed. A colleague helps. The public premise stops there: a man who will not close a door, and a magic he thinks can close it for him.

The grief is not the joke. The joke, if the series is honest, is the belief that an answer can be manufactured. A house that has someone missing already knows you do not get to force the news. You get to keep going to work, and to your father, while you wait.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

He still goes to work. The shop is ordinary, and he does not leave it for the vigil.

  2. Household

    7/10

He visits his father. The missing woman is the center of the house, and she is not in it.

  3. Piety

    4/10

He turns to a recipe for a small prophet instead of to any duty that could answer him.

  4. Courage

    5/10

Keeping the hope for seven years is a kind of courage, and it is also a way of not living.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A shed and a set of neighbors are not yet a town.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

The comedy does not mock the missing woman. It is uneasy about the method.

  7. Truth

    5/10

He wants a yes or a no he cannot make. The creatures cannot owe him one.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

What he keeps is the question. He has not yet kept a life beside it.

American Hostage

The microphone is the job. The lie on the air is the bill.

Fred Heckman, an Indianapolis radio reporter, is pulled into a real 1977 taking: a man will be heard, and a life is the price of the microphone. The season's public hours have Heckman talking the man through a collapse, saying things that land in his own marriage, and then selling immunity on the air so the man will sign. The law, the episodes say, is not planning to keep the promise.

A first measure, and the season is not finished. The courage of staying on the line is real. The lie told to a city is also real. A house can honor the wish to get everyone to morning and still refuse the idea that a microphone makes a false promise clean.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

He is a reporter, and the crisis makes the job the only room the city has.

  2. Household

    5/10

The public account says the talking costs his marriage. The house is in the story.

  3. Piety

    3/10

No creed. A man's demand to be heard is not a prayer.

  4. Courage

    6/10

He stays on the air with a man who is holding a life.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A city is listening. What he says becomes what the city thinks is true.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

The crisis is the tension. The series, so far, does not teach the taking.

  7. Truth

    5/10

He sells immunity on the air to bring the man in. The lie is named, and it is still a lie.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

He is trying to get a living person to the end of the day. The means are not clean.
