The Sheep Detectives

A good shepherd, a real death, a mystery a family can bear. Keep it.

George Hardy's flock was not a hobby. He read to them at night, which is a picture of tending that children understand before they understand a parable. Then he is dead, and the sheep refuse the comfortable lie that their kind simply becomes weather. They go looking. A mystery that starts from grief, rather than from a puzzle box, is the right kind.

The film is being talked about as a family picture that will say mortality and still be funny. That is allowed when the laugh does not erase the man. Do not let anyone in the room treat the shepherd as a premise. He was the one who showed up. Ask, when it ends, who is still being tended.

Casablanca

Keep it. A private wound is not a reason to sit out the fight.

Rick's neutrality is a costume for a hurt. Ilsa did not leave for a whim, and the film is adult enough to say so without making either of them a villain of the heart. The letters of transit are a public good disguised as a plot device. When he gives them up, he is not choosing loneliness as a style. He is putting a marriage and a resistance ahead of a feeling that was real and is no longer his to spend.

Watch it with anyone old enough to understand a goodbye. Then refuse the poster version, where the love is the point. The love is the test. The point is that he gets on the right side of a war.
