Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You

The song is the product. The people already in the house are the point, if the film remembers.

The wish is for spectacle: the voice, the lights, the famous want. A Christmas film for small children is allowed to be sweet. It is not allowed to teach that the holiday is a celebrity arriving. The useful version of this story is the one where the dog, the parent, and the ordinary room turn out to be the gift that was already there.

Put it on only as a small thing, and say the quiet line yourself if the movie will not. We do not need the famous person in order to keep the feast. The song can stay in the kitchen. It does not get to be the feast.

    Little work. A wish.

A family Christmas is the right setting.

  3. Piety

    4/10

The feast is the subject. The star is the temptation.

  4. Courage

    3/10

    Wanting is not bravery.

  5. Republic

    4/10

    A neighborhood of lights.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

The want is large and commercial.

  7. Truth

    4/10

Honest that it is a song tied to a brand.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

It can point a child home, or at a poster.

Live historicallyAsk a child what would still be Christmas if the song were off.

Clean Hands

Clean hands are a real standard. A thriller has to mean them or stop borrowing them.

The poster puts two people under a phrase from the moral life: who can touch this and stay clean. That can be a film about complicity, which this house cares about, or a chase that thought the words sounded expensive. The desk will not invent the smudge.

Hold the phrase either way. It is older than the movie. If the picture treats cleanliness as a naive obstacle for a hero who must get dirty, it is arguing with the phrase and it should be made to argue out loud.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

    A professional mess, perhaps.

  2. Household

    3/10

    Unknown.

  3. Piety

    4/10

The phrase is borrowed from a stricter tradition.

  4. Courage

    4/10

    Unproven.

  5. Republic

    4/10

Clean hands are a civic good, if they mean it.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

The title resists excess. The genre may not.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The words are the right test.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

Keep the phrase. Test the film against it.

Live historicallyRefuse a favor that would smudge a duty you already named.
