Jurassic Park

The science is a boast. The grandfather's job is to get the children out.

The enjoyment is the animals. The judgment is the man who thought a fence and a trademark were the same as responsibility. Grant does not save the world. He gets two children through a night that should not have existed.

Watch the wonder. Then say the sentence the film is too thrilled to underline: you do not make a life you will not keep.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

The work of the lab is real. The failure is that no one will answer for what the work makes.

  2. Household

    6/10

The children are not props. Getting them off the island becomes the only adult task.

  3. Piety

    5/10

Life is treated as a force. No one is asked whom they answer to for making it.

  4. Courage

    7/10

People go back into the park for a child. That is the courage. The teeth are the weather.

  5. Republic

    5/10

An island with no law but a fence. The fence was the whole republic, and it fails.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Wonder is fair. The film does not ask you to want the next tooth.

  7. Truth

    7/10

Hammond's park is a sales pitch about control. The pitch is false and the film says so.

  8. Stewardship

    3/10

They made living things they would not feed, fence, or answer for. The island is the bill.

Corpse Bride

A vow is a real thing. The film knows it, then spends too long in the underworld's party.

Victor's trouble starts because he treats the words of a marriage as a rehearsal he can mutter in a wood. The dead hear him. That is the right metaphysics for a comedy: a vow is not a draft. Emily is pitiable and she is also wrong to hold a living man to a mistake. The film lets her release him. That release is the decent ending.

The land of the dead is more fun than the land of the living, and the living wedding is a transaction between anxious parents. Count that. A marriage in this story is saved by mercy, not by the party downstairs. Watch it with older children. Do not let the skeletons outvote the vow.

The eight

  2. Household

    6/10

  3. Piety
