Inside Out 2

A true account of a new feeling that tries to run a person. Keep it. Talk after.

Riley is thirteen. The new emotions are not villains exactly, and Anxiety is not a joke: she believes that rehearsing every disaster is how you protect the person you love. The film's good turn is that a self built only out of anxiety's plans is a smaller self, and that Joy does not get to evict the new feelings either. They have to live in one head.

Watch it with a child near that age, or remember it yourself. The family is still the ground under the hockey and the friends. Ask which feeling has been holding the console in your house this month, and whether it will give the others a shift.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Hockey as practice. Anxiety turns it into a career plan too early.

  2. Household

    8/10

Parents still in the picture. Friends becoming a second household, which is the age and the risk.

  3. Piety

    4/10

No creed. A conscience that can feel like panic.

  4. Courage

    6/10

She has to walk back into the team after she has been unbearable.

  5. Republic

    5/10

A team, a camp, a coach. The public is a tryout.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

Anxiety is excess of care. The film says so without mocking the care.

  7. Truth

    8/10

The self she performs for the older girls is a lie she then has to retire.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

What she takes forward is a more honest mix, not a brand.
