Hamilton

A republic, built by a man who could not stop working or wanting. Thrilling, and not innocent.

This is the rare popular work that thinks the founding is interesting, and it is right. Hamilton's pen, Washington's restraint, and the argument over what a government owes a soldier are real subjects. Eliza is the conscience the title character keeps failing. The language is foul, the adultery is sung to break your heart in his favor, and a duel is the punctuation. A fifteen-year-old can learn from it and can also learn the wrong romance with brilliance.

Watch it with an older teen, not with the young. Stop after Eliza takes the narrative back, and ask what she built that he could not.

The eight

  1. Industry

    8/10

Work is the man's whole claim: he writes his way out. The musical believes labor is destiny, and it is half right.

  2. Household

    5/10

A wife who is better than the plot he gives her. The affair is not skipped. It is also given a ballad.

  3. Piety

    4/10

Providence is in the letters. The show's working creed is legacy.

  4. Courage

    8/10

Yorktown, the Reynolds confession, the duel. He pays in public more than once.

  5. Republic

    9/10

Cabinet fights as moral arguments. A new country argued into being by people who expected to be judged.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

Ambition is the drug, named, and then given the best songs.

  7. Truth

    7/10

Who lives, who dies, who tells your story. The show knows the record can be captured.

  8. Stewardship

    8/10

A son, a widow, and a system he is trying to leave standing. Eliza finishing the work is the true ending.
