Goldberg Variations

Columbia, under Sony. Bach, played as if the room had to be worthy of it.

Columbia released the 1955 record. Sony holds Columbia. Gould was young and already unwilling to play Bach as furniture. The aria returns at the end, the same and not the same, which is what a life of practice feels like.

Put it on when the house is skimming. It will not cooperate.

The eight

  1. Industry

    10/10

Thirty variations, and he does not coast.

  2. Household

    3/10

No story of a house. A discipline a house can keep.

  3. Piety

    8/10

Order, treated as worth a life.

  4. Courage

    7/10

He plays in the open, humming, unprotected.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A standard other players still measure against.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Nothing extra. Even the hum is his, not a show.

  7. Truth

    8/10

He does not sentimentalize the math.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

A thing to grow up near, the way you grow up near a well-built table.

Live historicallyThe aria, once, with nothing else happening. If you last, one variation more.

He Stopped Loving Her Today

Epic, under Sony. Fidelity, past the point of hope, told at a funeral.

Epic released it. Sony owns Epic. The man set a place for a woman who was not coming, for years, and the only day the place was cleared was the day he was buried. She comes back for that. The song does not condemn her. It simply tells you what he did.

It is almost too much. That is why it is a great country record. Do not use it to shame a living person out of a necessary goodbye.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

Jones sings it as if the grave is in the room. It is.

  2. Household

    8/10

A love that did not move on. The house is the one he kept ready.

  3. Piety

    7/10

A funeral. The sacred fact is that he kept the feeling until death.

  4. Courage

    7/10

The song refuses the modern advice to get over it.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A private life, ended in public.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

No second romance to make the plot kinder.

  7. Truth

    9/10

The last line is the whole truth of the title.

  8. Stewardship

    8/10

A hard song about a faithful heart. Not an order to refuse all healing.

Live historicallyPlay it once, all the way to the last line. Let the room be quiet after.
