Estella is mistreated and gifted, and the film has the skill to make her revenge look like authorship. The dogs, the mother, the partner she outgrows: they are arranged so that cruelty reads as liberation. That is the modern trick, and it is bad craft of the soul even when it is good craft of the frame. A woman can be wronged and still not be owed a reign of humiliation.
Adults only. If you watch, do not come away saying she was right. Say she was wounded and she chose to become a terror. The second fact is the one a house may not blur.
