Avatar

A man changes sides for a people and a woman. The battle is enormous. The loyalty is the part that matters.

Jake Sully arrives as a traitor in waiting and becomes a man who will not help strip a world that has taken him in. That turn is the story. The film tells it with a battle so large that a boy will remember the machines and forget the oath. Eywa is a religion, and the film means it. You can respect the seriousness without handing your children the firefight as their picture of courage.

Older kids, with you. Say what he owed the people who trusted him, and what the machines were for. The length and the violence are the reasons to wait.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

A marine's skill, then a body's apprenticeship in a forest. The mining is the false work.

  2. Household

    6/10

He becomes a mate and a father to a people. The human house he came from is already gone.

  3. Piety

    6/10

A world is treated as alive and owed something. The creed is the planet's, fully.

  4. Courage

    7/10

He turns on the power that made him, in the open.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A clan with a chief, a law, and a decision. The corporation is a raid.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

The war is the spectacle the film cannot resist, and it is very good at it.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The brief he was sent with was a lie. He says so.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

The question under the phosphorescence is whether a place can survive being wanted.
