He wins the city on a rescue that was not his.
Mark Kimball has already spent what the house had, in secret, on a race he is losing. His wife is already gone in all but the papers. A call says their son is taken. The son is at home. The boy who was taken is Hector, the son of the man who waits on their housekeeper. A fixer is hired. At the end the public is told that Mark is the man who saved the boy, and the votes follow.
The measure is that last thank-you. A child was the price of a story, and the story is what the city believed. Do not admire the nerve.
