Amazing Grace

Atlantic, under Warner. A sinner, saved. She does not sing it as a concept.

Atlantic released the live album. Warner holds it. Franklin takes the hymn back from polite use and sings it as a person who has needed the rescue. The choir is not decoration. It is the church doing its work.

If the house knows the cartoon version, play this one. It will not fit in the background.

The eight

  1. Industry

    10/10

Two nights in a church, and she holds nothing back.

  2. Household

    6/10

A congregation, which is a household of a kind.

  3. Piety

    10/10

The doctrine is the lyric. She means it.

  4. Courage

    7/10

She stands in a room and does not flinch from the word wretch.

  5. Republic

    6/10

    A people, answering.

The length is worship, not display.

Grace is for the wretch. She does not update the noun.

  8. Stewardship

    10/10

A recording a house can play on the Sunday it cannot get to church.

Live historicallySunday, her recording, at least one verse, with the words said by someone in the room.

A Change Is Gonna Come

RCA, under Sony. Hope, after a door is shut in his face.

RCA released it. Sony owns RCA. Cooke had sung smooth songs. This is the one he wrote after he was turned away, and after he heard a voice from his own generation say the country was not finished. He did not live to see much of the change. The record did.

Play it when the house is tempted to say nothing moves. Then do one thing that moves.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

He wrote it, sang it, and knew it might be the last serious thing.

  2. Household

    6/10

A mother, a home he is not sure he will see.

  3. Piety

    8/10

He asks a question of heaven and does not sneer at the asking.

  4. Courage

    9/10

He tells the truth about the theater that would not seat him.

  5. Republic

    9/10

A citizen, refused, who still believes the country can be corrected.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

Grief held in a line. Not spilled for effect.

  7. Truth

    10/10

    The refusal is described exactly.

  8. Stewardship

    10/10

A song the house should know by heart.

Live historicallyLearn the chorus. Sing it the next time the news says a door is still shut.
