Voicemails for Isabelle

The grief is true. The love story is a man listening at a door that was not his.

Jill's sister is dead, and she keeps leaving messages because the habit of telling Isabelle the day is the only way she can still have a sister. That is a human thing, and the film understands it. Then the number belongs to Wes, and Wes falls in love with a woman who does not know he is in the room. A romance that requires a lie about the dead is not a kindness, even if he is gentle, even if he gives the line back at the end so she can speak without him listening.

Grown people only. If you watch it, watch for the sister, not for the universe leaving a message. Afterward, call someone who is actually alive.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

She is trying to become a baker under a hard kitchen. The work is real and then the plot leaves it.

  2. Household

    6/10

A sister is mourned as a sister. That is the best thing in the picture.

  3. Piety

    4/10

The dead are spoken to. The film would rather call that fate than prayer.

  4. Courage

    4/10

She tells the truth to a phone. He does not tell the truth to her face.

  5. Republic

    3/10

San Francisco and Austin are backdrops for a couple.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

A private grief becomes a man's romance, and the film enjoys the secret.

  7. Truth

    4/10

He knows she thinks she is talking to the dead, and he keeps the line open anyway.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

What she is trying to keep is a voice. He eventually gives the line back. Late.
