The Ring

A mother trying to outrun a curse. The film wants the curse more than the mother.

Naomi Watts plays a woman who is bad at sitting still and suddenly has a reason not to. A child was wronged, and the wrong did not end when the child did. That is the serious kernel. The film's actual offer is a week of skilled fright and an ending that makes contagion the solution. Survival by handing the horror to the next person is a precise failure of the last measure.

Not for anyone young. Grown viewers who want a ghost can do better than a story whose moral is: pass it on.
