Monsters: The Truth Behind the Myths

Useful, if it stays a search and does not become a ghost story with a budget.

A documentary about monsters is a test of temperance. The honest version tells you what the people were afraid of — a child lost in the woods, a string of deaths, a stranger — and what they built to carry the fear. The dishonest version dangles the creature. Use this if it is the first kind. Turn it off the moment it becomes a dare.

Fine for older children beside you. Ask what the town needed the story to do.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Researchers, archives, a local who has lived there. The method is the show, when it behaves.

  2. Household

    3/10

No household. A campfire is the closest.

  3. Piety

    4/10

Room for the feeling that a world is larger than the explanation. Not a hunt for a demon to believe in.

  4. Courage

    5/10

They go to the place and ask.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A local story is treated as something a community made, which is respectful enough.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

It can resist the jump scare. It does not always.

  7. Truth

    7/10

The title makes a promise to prefer the account to the thrill.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

Old stories kept long enough to ask why they were told.

Live historicallyAsk the oldest person you know what they were told not to do after dark, and why.
