Gladiator
A father and a republic, told with too much blood and the right last sentence.
Maximus wants to go home to a field. The film will not let him, and it is honest that a republic sometimes spends that kind of man. The line people remember is the right line: what you do echoes. The hours of the arena are the tax, and they are not a small tax. A boy will remember the fights. You have to make him say the line back, and say what it costs.
Adults, and older teens only with you in the room. Not for the young. If the house watches it, the conversation is the difference between revenge and a city worth leaving behind you.
The eight
Industry
6/10
Soldiering and the arena are crafts. The film loves the craft more than it should.
Household
7/10
A wife and a son are the reason. Their murder is not a pretext he shrugs off.
Piety
6/10
Elysium, duty, and 'what we do in life echoes in eternity.' The soul is allowed.
Courage
9/10
He spends his body for a country that has already discarded him, and for the weak in the crowd.
Republic
7/10
The argument is that Rome belongs to the people, not to a son's appetite.
Temperance
6/10
The violence is the problem and the spectacle. You cannot pretend you were not invited to enjoy it.
Truth
7/10
A usurper's lie against a farmer-soldier's account. The film picks the account.
Stewardship
8/10
He wants to leave the city to a standard, not to a dynasty of himself.
