Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

A noisy quest that still knows the rule: you do not leave a player behind, and you finish what you started.

The Rock and the rest are playing teenagers, which is a stunt, and the stunt has a point: the boy who is afraid is strong here, the girl who is vain is useful here, and none of them get out alone. It is not a deep film. It is a decent one to watch with older children, because the rule of the game is the rule of a household project. You play it out.

The jokes about bodies are the part to talk over or skip. Keep the ending, where finishing matters more than looking brave.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

The game is a job with rules. Quitting is how you die inside it.

  2. Household

    5/10

They are not a family. By the end they behave like one under orders.

  3. Piety

    3/10

No reverence. A little awe at a world that can kill them.

  4. Courage

    7/10

Cowards and a bully have to spend themselves for the others.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A team with different gifts and a shared win condition. That is a small republic.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

Body jokes, regular and dumb. The peril is cartoon.

  7. Truth

    5/10

Each of them is lying about who they are at school. The game strips it.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

Finishing is how the next person is spared the curse. They do finish.

Live historicallyFinish a game, a chore, or a lesson you started with a child. All the way to the putting-away.

Brother Bear 2

A bond from childhood, taken seriously. Minor, and kinder than the poster.

Kenai chose the bears in the first film. Nita was his human friend, and her life has gone on toward a marriage. The sequel asks whether a vow to one nature cancels a love from the other. It is a small film and a sequel, and it prefers the bond to the spectacle. The village and the wilderness both have a claim.

Fine for a child who saw the first. The useful talk is about promises that conflict. You will not always get to keep every form of a life. You should know which one you are keeping, and not pretend the other was nothing.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

A village life and a wild one. Work is light.

  2. Household

    6/10

A childhood bond. A marriage is in the way, which the film treats as real.

  3. Piety

    4/10

Spirits and a debt to the change he already chose.

  4. Courage

    5/10

They cross back and forth at a cost.

  5. Republic

    5/10

A village that has expectations of Nita.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Nostalgia is sweet and is not allowed to be the only law.

  7. Truth

    6/10

He cannot be both forever. The film picks.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

What they keep is a love that predates the transformation.
