John Wick

Grief and craft. The code is real and it is still a code for killers. Do not move in.

Would you still put it on?

A retired killer is pulled back by a cruelty, and a grief, and a code among wolves.

What it really is

A man loses his wife, then the last living gift she gave him, and the film is canny enough to start there. Grief is not mocked. What follows is a ballet of revenge so clean it starts to feel like a moral system. It is not. It is a closed world where everyone is already guilty enough to be a target, which is how the conscience is put to sleep.

Respect the craft the way you respect a dangerous tool. Do not respect the retirement plan. A man who can only express love by emptying a building was failed long before the last reel. If you need a picture of mourning that does not recruit you into a guild of killers, you already have a better one on this shelf.

Live historically

Mourn something properly if you need to: a walk, a letter, a visit. Not a fantasy of everyone who wronged you.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

The craft of the work is undeniable. It is the craft of ending people.

  2. Household

    4/10

Love and a mourning are the spark. There is no house left, on purpose.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Ritual among assassins. A counterfeit church with gold coins.

  4. Courage

    6/10

He will walk through a building. The cause is a wound, then a habit.

  5. Republic

    2/10

A private underworld replaces the law and calls it honor.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

Revenge is a clean aesthetic. That cleanliness is the seduction.

  7. Truth

    5/10

Within the underworld, a word and a marker bind.

  8. Stewardship

    2/10

The future is more bodies. The dog was the last innocent thing.
