    Hope Floats

    Hope Floats

The child is not a subplot. Going home is the repair. A quiet keep.

Birdee's marriage is ended on television, which is a modern cruelty the film understands. The useful move is not the new man, though he is kind. It is the mother, the old house, and the daughter who has to watch her parent become a person again. Humiliation is not a personality. Work and a child will do more than a speech about believing in yourself.

It is sentimental, and the sentiment is mostly aimed right. Watch it when someone in the house has been made a spectacle. Then be ordinary with them on purpose.

    1. Industry

    Jumanji

    Prime Video · 1995 · Film

    Jumanji

Finish what you started. A good peril-picture for a family that can take a stampede.

Alan is a fatherless adventure that becomes a caution: the game does not care that you are bored of it. The children learn that a fun thing with rules is still a vow. There is noise, and there are creatures, and the ending puts the children back in a life where the work is ordinary. That return is the moral. A fantasy that will not give the child back is a theft. This one gives them back.

Some images are too much for the very small. For everyone else, the lesson is plain enough to say over the credits. You do not quit a dangerous thing in the middle and shut the closet.

    1. Industry

      6/10

The game is a task that must be completed.

    2. Household

      6/10

      7/10

    8. Stewardship

      7/10

It hands a child back to an ordinary afternoon.

Live historicallyDo not leave a mess in the house for the next child to inherit.

  3. Stewardship with a cartoon sermon. The sermon is not wrong. The humans are thin.

Hexxus is pollution with a voice, and the film is honest that a machine with no master will eat until the green is gone. Crysta is brave. Zak learns that a job can be a harm even when the men doing it are ordinary. That is a fair lesson.

It is also a sermon that flattens the loggers into the spell. Stewardship in a real county has to count the paycheck and the watershed in the same sentence. Watch it for the creature and the smoke. Then take the child outside, where the question is harder and the trees are not voiced by a fairy.

    1. Industry

      5/10

Logging is shown as a job. The machine is the villain, the men are almost props.

    2. Household

      4/10

No household. A friendship across kinds.

    3. Piety

      6/10

The forest is treated as a created thing with a claim on the people in it.

    4. Courage

    5. Republic

      5/10

    Local Hero

    Prime Video · 1983 · Film

    Local Hero

Keep it. A quiet comedy about a place that is not a site.

Mac's errand is a purchase. The film gives him weather, a phone box, a bartender, an old man who owns the beach, and enough time to lose the taste for the deal. Nobody is a yokel. The company is not a cartoon. The magic is low and local, including the Northern Lights, which are not a metaphor so much as a fact he had no room for in Houston. Development that cannot see a place is the soft villain.

Watch it when the house is loud. It rewards attention the way the village does. If you get restless, that restlessness is the thing the film is treating.

    1. Industry

      6/10

A deal, then the work of actually looking.

    2. Household

      4/10

      A village of particular households.

      7/10

      The beach belongs to someone.

    8. Stewardship

      8/10

It hands you a reluctance to pave.

Live historicallyBefore you call a place an opportunity, learn the name of the bay.

  5. Old, stiff, and on the side of the odd child. The song is not the whole story.

Rudolph is mocked for his nose. Hermey wants to be a dentist. The abominable snowman is a bully and then a patient. The island of misfit toys is the part to sit up for: things that were discarded because they did not match a catalog, waiting for someone to take them home. The ending still leans on usefulness — the glowing nose saves Christmas — and a parent should add the sentence the special forgets. He was already worth keeping in the fog.

The animation is simple. The mercy is not. A December house can use it.

    1. Industry

      5/10

An elf who wants a different craft. A reindeer with a job only a storm reveals.

    2. Household

      6/10

They make a little company of the rejected.

    3. Piety

    Pound Puppies

    Prime Video · 2010 · Series

    Pound Puppies

Adoption is a real good. Cartoon danger, cartoon ending. Then look at an actual animal.

The secret-agent framing is silly and a child can see that it is silly. Under it, the show prefers a specific dog with a specific person to a dog left in a cage. That preference is sound.

Watch one. If the house is not prepared to care for an animal, say so, and do not let the cartoon be the argument.

    1. Industry

      6/10

They have a mission and they execute it. The job is finding a home.

    2. Household

      6/10

A home is the happy ending, and it is the right happy ending.

    3. Piety

      2/10

A pet is a responsibility, not a toy. The better episodes remember.

    8. Stewardship

      6/10

The thing handed on is a creature that will still be there tomorrow.

Live historicallyIf you can take care of a pet, consider the one that is waiting. If you cannot, do not pretend the episode was a promise.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

    Prime Video · 2010 · Series

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

A student who has to practice the lesson. Better than the toy aisle. Stop when the lesson becomes a slogan.

Twilight is a good student with bad habits of pride, sent to live where other personalities do not organize themselves around her. That is a real plot. The later mythology gets louder than the town, and the stated moral gets cheaper.

The early seasons are fit for a child who likes a group of friends. Ask them to do the lesson, not to recite it.

    1. Industry

      5/10

Study, a job in a library, a craft of magic that has rules.

    2. Household

      6/10

A band of friends that functions as a household of different tempers.

    3. Piety

      3/10

    4. Courage

      5/10

They face the creature of the week. The fear is sized for a child.

    5. Republic

      5/10

A town with jobs, a princess, and a public festival. Civic life in pastel.

    6. Temperance

      7/10

Jealousy and boasting are the usual sins, and they are corrected.

    7. Truth

      6/10

The moral is said out loud. Sometimes that is honesty. Sometimes it is a sticker.

    8. Stewardship

      5/10

A lesson a child can repeat. The risk is that repeating it replaces doing it.

Live historicallyAfter one episode, have the child practice the friendship on a person in the house who is not easy.

  8. 08

    The Agency

    Prime Video · 2024 · Series

    The Agency

A spy story that counts the cost. The cost is still other people's countries and his own.

Unlike the caper version of spying, this one is about a man who cannot be fully anywhere. That is the right tragedy for the job. It is not a tragedy to volunteer for if you have a child, and the show is honest enough to let you see that.

Adults. One season is the argument. You do not need to make it a habit.

    1. Industry

      6/10

Tradecraft, shown as work rather than a montage of sunglasses.

    2. Household

      3/10

    3. Piety

      4/10

Drier than the genre usually allows.

    7. Truth

      5/10

It is interested in the lie as a damage, not only as a tool.

    8. Stewardship

      3/10

The future he protects is abstract. The daughter is concrete and second.

Live historicallyBe where you told your house you would be. The whole show is the negative of that sentence.

    Wednesday

    Netflix · 2022 · Series

    Wednesday

Wit without duty. A sneer is not a character, however well dressed.

Wednesday is popular because contempt, done cleanly, feels like intelligence. It is not. It is a posture, and a boarding-school mystery is there to give the posture a plot. She is brave. She is also a lesson in how easy it is to mistake a sneer for a spine.

Young people already know how to be unimpressed. They do not need a show to coach it. If someone in your house loves her, do not ban the pleasure. Ask what she protects besides her own taste. If the answer is a friend, you have found the part worth praising. If the answer is the outfit, you have found the limit.

    1. Industry

      4/10

She is competent. The competence is mostly a pose.

    2. Household

      3/10

Family is a gothic joke. Tenderness has to sneak in.

    3. Piety

      2/10

The macabre is the creed. Reverence would ruin the bit.

    4. Courage

      6/10

    5. Republic

      3/10

    The Great

    Hulu · 2020 · Series

    The Great

A real reformer's impulse, drowning in a court the show cannot stop giggling at.

Catherine wants Russia to be less cruel, more literate, and slightly less likely to die of its own court. That want is admirable. The show wraps it in a debauch and asks you to find the debauch funnier than the reform. Often you will. That is the tell.

A standard that only scolded the excess and ignored the attempt would be priggish. A viewer who only remembers the excess has been had. If you watch, keep score yourself: every time the joke is on a human appetite with no bill, mark it down. Every time someone risks their place for a saner law, mark that too. We did. The first column wins.

    1. Industry

      5/10

She wants institutions, science, a country that works. The court wants a party.

    2. Household

      3/10

    3. Piety

      2/10

    4. Courage

      6/10

Pushing a court toward law takes nerve, even played as farce.

    5. Republic

    6. Temperance

      1/10
