Monument Valley

Beautiful, finished, and thin. A good hour. Not a moral education, and it has the decency to end.

Would you still put it on?

A quiet puzzle of impossible architecture, finished in a handful of chapters.

What it really is

This is a small, finished work. The rooms are beautiful. The puzzles ask you to see. Then the chapter is over and the game does not beg you to stay. On a phone, an ending is a virtue.

It will not teach a child who they are. Do not ask it to. Play it when you want a quiet hour that stops. If you need the evening to do more than be lovely, choose the Bible or the lesson or a book above this one.

Live historically

If you play it, play until a chapter ends, then stop. Beauty is not an excuse for a second hour.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

You have to look carefully. The puzzle does not solve itself.

  2. Household

    4/10

No family is required. A child and a parent can still hand the screen back and forth.

  3. Piety

    4/10

There is wonder in the rooms. It is a designed wonder, and it does not ask for more.

  4. Courage

    4/10

The risk is getting stuck, which is small and fair.

  5. Republic

    3/10

A private dream, not a town.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

It ends. That alone puts it above most of the shelf.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The geometry is honest about being impossible. It is not lying about the world.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

You keep the memory of a few rooms. Little else is handed on.
