Claude by Anthropic

A capable clerk for a checked task. Not a confidant. The polite voice is not a virtue if they start preferring it to people.

Would you still put it on?

Another fluent clerk. Kinder in tone, same risk of being mistaken for a friend.

What it really is

Claude is the same kind of object as the other chat apps: a model that answers in a steady voice. The voice is the danger. A teenager hears patience and thinks he has been understood.

Keep it, if at all, as a tool on a desk with a person nearby. Do not let it be the last conversation of the night.

Live historically

If they use it, they show you the answer and the source they checked it against.

From the desk of Living Historic.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

It will help draft, explain, and revise. The revision still needs a reader.

  2. Household

    3/10

A teen will tell it what he will not tell the table.

  3. Piety

    4/10

It can be asked to refuse a cruel use. It will not form a conscience.

  4. Courage

    4/10

It agrees more often than a good teacher does.

  5. Republic

    4/10

Private counsel from a company is not the counsel of a town.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

The conversation has no natural end.

  7. Truth

    5/10

It is less theatrical than some. It is still a guess spoken cleanly.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

The skill it leaves is prompting, not judgment.
