AllTrails

Useful the hour you leave the house. Worthless if the map is the walk. Go.

Would you still put it on?

A map of paths, so a house can go outside on purpose.

What it really is

A map that gets a family out the door is doing a good job. Pick a trail short enough that no one is punished for coming. Tell them what to carry. Then put the phone away until you need the fork in the path.

The failure mode is collecting trails the way other people collect shows. A list of hikes you mean to take is not stewardship. The dirt on the shoes is. If you open this, leave the house the same day.

Live historically

Walk one path this week with someone from the house. Pack out what you carried in.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

It finds a path. Your legs do the work, or they don't.

  2. Household

    6/10

A family can pick a trail they can actually finish.

  3. Piety

    5/10

A wood is easier to revere once you are in it. The app is not the reverence.

  4. Courage

    7/10

A longer trail asks something. Choose one you can keep.

  5. Republic

    6/10

Public land, used in common, left as you found it.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

The app should be in a pocket, not in front of the view.

  7. Truth

    7/10

The distances are real. Do not treat a review as a promise about the weather.

  8. Stewardship

    8/10

A path kept by the people who walk it and pack out what they brought.
