Bella does not grow a skill, a friendship, or a conviction that is not Edward. The book knows he is dangerous and uses that knowledge as the attraction. A reader who is already lonely will feel understood, which is why it sold, and why it does not belong in a house that is trying to raise someone.

There are better stories about first love that leave the girl intact. This one practices erasure and calls it devotion.
