To Kill a Mockingbird

Still the book. Read it, and do not let the argument about it replace it.

Would you still put it on?

A lawyer in a small Alabama town defends a black man the town has already convicted.

What it really is

The book is a child's eye on a father's defeat. Atticus does not win, and the book does not pretend the town was waiting to be impressed. That is more useful than a story where the good people are rewarded by the crowd.

Read the trial. Then read the last chapters, which are about Boo Radley and a child's conscience, not about a speech. The speech is the part people quote so they can skip the porch.

Live historically

Read it before you discuss it. The discussion is not the book.
