Hansel and Gretel

Appetite is the witch's house. The harder fact is that the parents sent them there.

Would you still put it on?

Parents leave two children in the woods. A house made of food is the second trap.

What it really is

The part people remember is the gingerbread. The part the score has to count is the opening. There is not enough food, and the adults decide the children are what the house can spare. That is a household failing before the witch appears.

Gretel's courage is real. The candy is a lesson about appetite that a child can follow. Do not let the gingerbread cover the first scene.

Live historically

If the house is short of something, say so. Do not make a child the thing you cut.
