Minecraft

The building is real. The hours are the bill. Play it with a stopping time, or it will raise the evening instead of you.

Would you still put it on?

A world of blocks where a child can build, and also disappear all evening.

What it really is

Do not pretend this is only a waste. A child who builds a house, a farm, and a road has practiced planning. You can see the work. That is more than a costume game gives you.

Do not pretend the hours are free. There is no last page. If you hand over the device and leave, the game is the parent until you come back. Set the time before it starts. Play where you can see the screen. When the time is up, stop, and ask what they built. If they cannot say, they were not building. They were being kept.

Live historically

Set a time before it opens. When it ends, have them show you one thing they made.

The eight

  1. Industry

    8/10

A child gathers, plans, and builds. That part is industry.

  2. Household

    5/10

It can be a world shared with a sibling. It is more often a closed door.

  3. Piety

    2/10

No reverence is asked. A world you can smash without consequence trains that habit.

  4. Courage

    5/10

The dark has a cost in the game. It is a small courage, and a safe one.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A private world is not a town. Other players can make it worse, not better.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

There is no natural end. The evening goes until someone stronger than the game says stop.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The blocks obey rules. The chatter around the game often does not.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

A build can be kept and shown. A weekend lost to it is not a thing you can hand on.
